Principal Research ScientistMIT AeroAstro

Dr. Florian Allroggen is a Principal Research Scientist in the MIT Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics and Executive Director of MIT’s Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment.

His research focuses on innovation in the air transportation sector, with an emphasis on the interplay between technology, energy systems, and economics. His work examines how emerging technologies—particularly new aviation energy carriers—can be developed, scaled, and integrated into the global aviation system. He analyzes the techno-economics of alternative fuels, including feedstock availability, energy requirements, and supply chain constraints, and evaluates their implications for airline operations, infrastructure, and market dynamics.

More broadly, Dr. Allroggen develops and applies quantitative models to assess how technological and operational change influences costs, competitiveness, and system-wide outcomes across the aviation sector. His work bridges engineering, economics, and policy to provide decision-relevant insights for industry and government stakeholders.

Dr. Allroggen serves as a nominated expert to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (Working Group 5 on Aviation Fuels). He is also the lead instructor of MIT’s Airline Industry course.

It will ground the audience in SAF fundamentals, while unpacking the key policy and market barriers that must be addressed to accelerate adoption. Panelists will examine the current jet fuel supply chain, emerging SAF production technologies, and the most pressing bottlenecks to scale. The discussion will also highlight how Massachusetts can leverage its innovation ecosystem to position itself as a leader in SAF. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the near-term opportunities—and the practical steps needed over the next three years to move SAF from momentum to scale.  Show MoreClick the title to see all detailsShow More
